Where can I get afternoon chai in Edinburgh?
The Prahna Indian Grill in Corstorphine serves afternoon chai on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 3pm and 5pm. It is the Indian answer to the British tradition of afternoon tea: a pot of Cutting Masala Chai paired with savoury and sweet bites, served on a tiered Prahna board.
Cutting Masala Chai is the house pour at Prahna from the moment the dining room opens. It is cardamom, ginger, and crushed black pepper steeped in fresh milk and brewed long, the way it is served at chai stalls in western India. For afternoon chai we serve it from a small pot that pours four cups, alongside a tiered board of bites.
The savoury tier rotates weekly with the kitchen but typically includes paneer tikka rolls, methi mathri, mini vada-pav sliders, and a single cooled curry skewer. The sweet tier is mithai season-led: jalebi shards, kulfi tartlets, gulab jamun, and a Scottish berry pavlova when summer fruit is on. The savoury and sweet sit on Prahna-branded wooden boards.
Afternoon chai service is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 3pm and 5pm, between the lunch and dinner services. Booking is recommended; the dining room is small and afternoon chai is well-loved. Reserve through SevenRooms or by phone on 0131 563 4748.
